Stewart Greenwood

 

Stewart Greenwood was born in Chaceley, Gloucestershire, England on July 22, 1918.

 

He was the son of the late Leonard and Ada (Whaley) Greenwood. Stewart graduated grade 8 from the local public school and studied highway engineering through the International Correspondence School. In 1930, at the age of 12, he and his family immigrated to Canada, arriving by ship into Montreal. They settled in Waterborough, where he grew up on St. Ives Farm. He attended the Waterborough School, and helped his father on the farm and with his butchering business. He later worked at the Wiggins Box Factory. Stewart joined the Canadian Army on October 8th, 1940, served in Saint John, Camp Borden and overseas from 1944 with the Canadian Provost Corps, until he was discharged as a Sergeant, February 1946 in Fredericton. He became a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) in 1938, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1947 receiving his Legion Meritorious Service Medal (L.M.S.M.) and holding several positions including: Past President, Poppy chair and Service Officer; he was a charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Grand Washademoak Branch # 60.

 
 
 

In 1960, Stewart worked as a Road Construction Superintendent with Modern Construction Ltd. for 23 years until his retirement in 1982. He also worked for John Dysart with Cassidy Lake Potash Company. Stewart was very active in St. Luke's Anglican Church, serving on vestry and as a Worden for many years. He loved to travel, take bus tours, cross-country ski, skate and garden. He volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels until his failing health prevented him. He also enjoyed attending military-themed functions at Base Gagetown and the Tatoo.

Stewart is survived by his wife Lena May (Sleep) Greenwood; two daughters: Ferne Greenwood and her husband Frank MacDonald of Bedford, NS, Bonnie Greenwood and her husband Bill Robinson of Fredericton; two grandchildren: Andrew Robinson of Toronto and Sarah Robinson of Fredericton; two sisters: June Wiggins and her husband Noble of Youngs Cove Rd. and Vanda White and her husband Ken of Saint John; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Stewart Bonear Greenwood of Union Settlement Rd. Waterborough passed away at the Millcove Nursing Home on August 12, 2007 at the age of 89.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex , (506-433-1176), where visitation will be held on Thursday from 6-9 pm .

The Royal Canadian Legion Grand Washademoak Branch # 60 and Sussex Branch #20 will hold a Tribute Thursday evening at 6:45pm .

The Funeral Service will be held from St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Youngs Cove Rd. on Friday, August 17, 2007 at 2:00 pm. The interment will take place at St. Luke’s Anglican Church.

As an expression of sympathy, donations made to the Millcove Nursing Home, St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Youngs Cove or to the memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
