John Thomas Maxwell
was the son of the late Mervyn and
Dorothy (Booth) Maxwell and was born on
December 16th,
1940 on a kitchen table in Harrisville,
NB., later moving to the
Mill Road
in (Lewisville) Moncton. Tom took his first job during high school, delivering
groceries to earn money for his cigarettes. He graduated
from
Moncton
High School
in 1960. Upon graduation, Tom began an eighteen-year
career with Star Electric, where he received his
electricians license. Tom met Rose Lewis of
Gunningsville,
NB
and wed on
December 17th,
1966. In their Gunningsville home, Tom and
Rose raised their four children and Tom developed his life
long passion for working on race cars. Tom went on to win
the seasons championship at Riverglade Speedway in 1968.
Many great times and several wonderful friendships were
developed at that track. Tom and Rose built a camp on the
Kennebecasis
River where the family spent most weekends, summers and a number
of Christmases. They enjoyed snowmobiling, swimming,
fishing, hunting and spending time around the fire barrel.
In Tom’s final years at Star
Electric, he became the Electrical Coordinator at the Dr.
Everett Chalmers Hospital in
Fredericton
, completing the job as Project Manager. In the early
1970’s the family moved to
Fredericton, after the completion of the hospital in 1976, a business
opportunity presented itself in the
Sussex
area. Tom formed Maxwell Construction, which he operated
for over 30 years, retiring in 2005. During the off
season, Tom and Rose enjoyed many trips including,
Hawaii, Mexico, Spain
and the
Caribbean.
After his retirement, Tom and
Rose took their new truck and fifth-wheeler and headed
south and for two years, they spent several months there
each winter. Tom loved his family and would look forward
to Christmas dinner when all his grandchildren were there,
he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and NASCAR, his
love of hunting began with his father and uncles at an
early age. He enjoyed all game hunting but was passionate
about moose; having several successful hunts in Little
Salmon River and 13 in
Newfoundland
. Throughout the years, Tom continued his love of racing;
following the NASCAR circuit and attending races in
Atlanta
and
Talladega
.

Arrangements
are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34
Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where visitation
will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
The Funeral
Service will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on
Saturday, August 11, 2007 at 11:00 am. The interment will
take place at Evergreen Memorial Park.
As an expression of sympathy donations made to the
Friends of the Moncton Hospital Oncology Dept. or to the
memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by
the family. |
