Doris Etta was born on a cold January
day in 1915, in the small rural community of New
Jerusalem. The second child and the second daughter of
Judson and Margaret Fulton, Doris attended a one room
school along with her sister, Elsie, and her brothers
Charles and Lloyd.
Visiting neighbours, church activities, dances
and socials were all a part of Doris’ life in the
tight knit community.
In 1931, her father died and life
changed. In spite of this loss, she was able to attend
New Brunswick Normal School, graduating in June 1934.
Doris
taught in many rural schools during her ten year
career, including: Pollyhearst in West Jerusalem,
Clones, Albert County, Smith Town, Dunn’s Corner,
Coote Hill and Jerusalem.
One of her students “Eldon Graham” says,
“She was a strict but good teacher. I liked her.”
In September of 1944, she married Oliver
Dunn at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Their
married life began in Headline, where they resided
until 1953, when the area farms were expropriated for
base Gagetown.
