Doris Etta Dunn

Doris Etta was born on a cold January day in 1915, in the small rural community of New Jerusalem. The second child and the second daughter of Judson and Margaret Fulton, Doris attended a one room school along with her sister, Elsie, and her brothers Charles and Lloyd.  Visiting neighbours, church activities, dances and socials were all a part of Doris’ life in the tight knit community.

In 1931, her father died and life changed. In spite of this loss, she was able to attend New Brunswick Normal School, graduating in June 1934.

Doris taught in many rural schools during her ten year career, including: Pollyhearst in West Jerusalem, Clones, Albert County, Smith Town, Dunn’s Corner, Coote Hill and Jerusalem.  One of her students “Eldon Graham” says, “She was a strict but good teacher. I liked her.”

In September of 1944, she married Oliver Dunn at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Their married life began in Headline, where they resided until 1953, when the area farms were expropriated for base Gagetown.

After the move from Queen’s County, they settled in Smith Creek where they farmed until their retirement in 1984.  Sussex Corner was their next home until Oliver’s death in May of 1989. Failing health took Doris to Pearl Raymond’s Special Care Home the previous December and she lived there until Pearl’s retirement in 1996.  Doris’ final home was with John and Violet Long of Sussex. They treated her as one of the family, with care and love. She wasn’t able to get out much in her last years and that bothered her greatly as she loved to socialize.

On Monday evening, November 5, 2007, Doris died peacefully in her sleep at the grand old age of 92 years and 10 months.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Fulton of Norton, her brother and sister-in-law, John and Ruth Dunn of Mount Pisgah, her sister-in-law, Evaline Prosser of Sussex and her brother and sister-in-law Ronald and Jeanette Dykeman of Minto, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Elsie Pevlin, her brothers: Charles and Lloyd and her nephew, David Fulton.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where visitation will be held on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9pm.

A Celebration of Doris' life will  be held from Wallace Community Chapel Thursday, November 8, 2007 at 1:00pm with Rev. Gene Fisher officiating. There will be a time of fellowship with the family following the service.

The interment will take place at Oceanview Memorial Gardens, Saint John, NB at 3:30pm.
