Levi Ryder

Levi was born in Bagdad July 26, 1910 and was the son of the late Ransford and Sadie (McGarity) Ryder. At the age of eight, when his mother passed away Levi, with his sisters Olive and Eva went to board at Harry Barton’s home for 2 ½ years; then with Caleb Lewis for a year followed by a period with John Perry where he went to school for a short time and finally to Robert Stewart’s for 16 years where he later met and married the love of his life: Pearl Phillips. Levi was a real family man, he loved his wife and children very much, he often spoke about them and the great times they had. Levi was a very hard worker and had many jobs throughout his lifetime: he worked in the woods, 20 miles above Chipman, loaded lumber on scows, under the first woman sea captain “Molly Kool”, in Little Salmon River on the Fundy Shores.

He was a cook in a lumber camp, drove a delivery truck for a country store and later was employed at the government garage for a few years and then retired after a 23 year position at CN; Levi had many friends. He was a hard working man and always offered advice and wisdom from his experiences that he had learned along the way. Levi was always there with a helping hand and didn’t expect anything in return. Levi was blunt and to the point and if he had something to say he said it.  He loved to have visitors in for a chat, hunting deer and partridge, keeping up on the daily goings on, especially politics,

reading his Bible and newspaper, watching TV on Sunday mornings and listening to Perry F. Rockwood on the radio. After his retirement from CN, Levi spent his time just    loving his wife and family. In 2000, Pearl went to the Kiwanis Nursing Home, where she stayed until she passed away in 2004.  Levi is survived by three daughters: Isabell Clark and her husband Lloyd, Eva Wood and her husband Beverley and Hazel Wiggins, two sons: Robert and his wife Betty and Beverley and his wife Yvette; 23 grandchildren: Merlin, Weyman, Philip and his wife Christina, Anita, Joan and her husband Donald, Marty, Ralph, Larry and his wife Lynn, Virginia and her husband Basil,  Benjamin and his wife Shannon, Wendy and her husband Barry, Matthew and his wife Natalie, Wayne and his wife Dorothy, Brian and his wife Della, Christine and Roger, Brenda, Barry and his wife Wendy, Norma and her husband Michael, Gordon and his wife Sheila, Catherine, Kelly, Warren and Patrick; 35 great-grandchildren: Cassandra, Jeffery, Tyler, Tiffany, Tina, Tonya, Mitchell, Michael, Mark, Randy, Eric, Bonnie, Holly, Sharon, Melissa, Jessica, Morgan, Andrew, Courtney, Terry, Victoria, Bryden, Tabetha, Evan, Bradley, Murray, Nickolas, Dustin, Melissa, Damien, Devin, Conrad, Lucas, Alex and Laughlin; three great-great grandchildren: Dylan, Aiden and Lillie; as well as several nieces and nephews.
