Verna Bernita Black
Verna Bernita Black of Canaan Forks, passed away at the Sussex Health Centre, on April 18, 2003. Verna was born in Cherryvale, on April 3, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William and Edith (Corey) Black.

Verna is survived by one sister, Hazel Kierstead and her husband Clevie of Cherryvale, a sister-in-law, Dora Black of Moncton, several nieces and nephews.

Verna was predeceased by 2 sisters, Helena Damery and Muriel Thorne and by 3 brothers, Elmer, Avard and Aubrey.

At a tender age of 16 ½ years, she began her teaching career, on local license at Hunters Home, Berryvale (Forkstream) Canaan Forks, New Canaan, Manhurst, Smithtown East. She then went to teachers college and graduated in 1956 with a first class license. Verna taught grade 4 at Hampton Consolidated School for 12 years. During the summer she attended UNB summer school. During her teaching period at Hampton, she traveled for nearly 4 years every morning and night helped out at home caring for her semi-invalid mother. One year she taught 51 children. After 12 years she left Hampton and taught at Havelock Elementary School. During her 26 ½ year teaching period in Havelock Verna taught grades 2 to 8. Her total teaching career was 50 years. In the summer she was busy helping at home, driving the mail, doing housework, working on the farm as well as helping with taking care of her semi-invalid mother. Verna will be remembered for her strong love of the children that she taught. Verna was a member of the New Canaan Baptist Church, the Neighbour Hood Watch Program and the New Brunswick Teachers Association.

Arrangements in care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), with visitation on Saturday 2-4 p.m. The Funeral Service is from Wallace Memorial Chapel on Sunday, April 20, 2003 at 2:30 pm., with Pastor Wayne Ward officiating. A private family committal service will take place at Canaan Forks Cemetery. There will be a time of fellowship with the family following the committal service at the Canaan Community Hall in Cherryvale.

The Pallbearers were: David Black, Nathan Black, Perry Black, Larry Black, Joe Black and Reace Black.

Honorary Pallbearers: Cecil Damery, Cherry Thorne, Dwight Thorne, Stanley Black and Albert Black.
